Train Gifts for People Who Really Love Trains

Most train gifts are a mug with a steam engine on it.

If you are buying for someone who knows their Class 43 from their Class 800, who can tell you exactly why the 07:42 is always late, or who still slows down a little when they pass a station — they have had the mug. Probably three.

This page is for the other kind of gift. The kind that goes on the wall or the desk and then genuinely gets looked at, every single day, for years.

Train gifts for adults, not toys

Search for train gifts and you mostly get wooden track sets and Thomas the Tank Engine. Nothing wrong with either — but they are not what you are after when you are buying for a grown-up who follows the real railway.

Why a live departure board makes such a good gift

The commuter

This is where the detail earns its keep. The boards handle timing points and junctions, not just stations — and show freight, empty coaching stock and passing services, not only the passenger departures. They will notice.

The retired railwayman
