Train Gifts for People Who Really Love Trains

Most train gifts are a mug with a steam engine on it.

If you are buying for someone who knows their Class 43 from their Class 800, who can tell you exactly why the 07:42 is always late, or who still slows down a little when they pass a station — they have had the mug. Probably three.

This page is for the other kind of gift. The kind that goes on the wall or the desk and then genuinely gets looked at, every single day, for years.

Train gifts for adults, not toys

Search for train gifts and you mostly get wooden track sets and Thomas the Tank Engine. Nothing wrong with either — but they are not what you are after when you are buying for a grown-up who follows the real railway.

Everything below is built for adults, though there is something for younger enthusiasts further down.

Why a live departure board makes such a good gift

A UK Departure Boards display is a real departure board for their home. Not a picture of one, not a novelty with fixed text — an actual working board, wired to the same live National Rail feed that drives the screens at the station.

They choose the station. Their commute. Their home town. The line they grew up beside. The platform where they proposed. It shows the real trains running right now, with the real delays, the real platform alterations and the real cancellations.

And it does not have to be a train station. The boards cover UK bus stops, the London Underground, trams and metro systems too — so if the person you are buying for travels by something other than train, it still works exactly the same way.

And then it speaks

This is the part nobody expects.

We licensed the actual voices. Phil Sayer, Elinor Hamilton and Janine Cooper-Marshall — the announcers heard on British stations for years. Not an impression. Not a text-to-speech approximation. The genuine recordings, officially licensed, announcing the genuine train.

The first time a board says “The train now approaching platform 2 is the 14:52 to Weston-super-Mare” in the voice from the station, in someone’s kitchen — that is the moment the gift lands.

No other display on the market does this. Most cannot make a sound at all. Browse the voice packs to see which announcers are available.

The boards

Every board does the same core job: live UK train, tube, tram and bus departures for any station you choose. The difference is size, and where it is going to live. Boards start at £164.99.

Desktop Departures is the compact OLED desk display and the board most people start with — it sits beside a monitor or on a shelf, in four screen colours and a black or white case. The Transparent Limited Edition is the same size in a clear case; when a run sells out, that is the end of it.

The Classic and Pro are the full-size LED boards — the ones that genuinely look like the real thing on a wall, because essentially they are. The Classic measures 60cm × 11.5cm × 3.5cm, which suits a hallway, a study or a hobby room.

If they already have a board

These are add-ons rather than standalone gifts — they need a board to work on. Worth knowing before you buy.

Who are you buying for?

The commuter

Set it to their home station. They will check it on the way out of the door every morning, and it will save them a wet walk to the platform more than once. If they commute by tube rather than train, it works identically — pick their Underground station instead.

The lifelong enthusiast

The one with the books, the photographs and the firm opinions. Give them an LED board and a voice pack, and then stand well back.

This is where the detail earns its keep. The boards handle timing points and junctions, not just stations — and show freight, empty coaching stock and passing services, not only the passenger departures. They will notice.

The retired railwayman

Forty years on the railway, and then one day it stops. A board showing the line they worked, announcing in a voice they heard every working day, is not a gadget to them.

This is the one we get letters about. John’s board is worth two minutes of your time.

Someone who has moved away

Set it to the station they grew up next to. It turns out to be a surprisingly emotional gift, and we did not design it that way on purpose.

A younger enthusiast

Trains are a subject a lot of children go deep on, and a live board rewards that properly. If you are buying for a child who finds the predictability of timetables genuinely calming, we wrote about sensory-friendly train gifts separately.

Other rail gifts worth considering

We do not sell these and we make nothing from recommending them. If a board is not the right fit, these are genuinely good presents:

  • A heritage railway driver experience. The Severn Valley, the Bluebell and the Keighley & Worth Valley all run them. Not cheap, and never forgotten.
  • National Railway Museum membership. York and Shildon, and it supports the collection.
  • A magazine subscription. RAIL for news and opinion, Modern Railways for the industry side.
  • Books. Simon Bradley’s The Railways: Nation, Network and People is the one to give someone who believes they already know the subject.
  • Model railways. A starter set for a younger enthusiast, or good rolling stock for an established layout.
  • Original poster reproductions. BR and LNER travel posters frame beautifully and cost less than you would think.

The practical bits

Does a UK Departure Board need a subscription?

No. All our departure boards work without any subscription, displaying departures for any UK train, tube, tram or bus station or stop — you simply get a default set of options and features. The subscription unlocks the rest.

Can I give a departure board as a gift?

Yes. Boards can be sent directly to the recipient, and a gift voucher is instant if you would rather let them choose.

Will a UK Departure Board work outside the UK?

Yes, as long as there is wifi. It shows UK time and UK services only. The board ships with a UK plug rated 110v–240v, so outside the UK you can swap it for any local 5v 3A DC-jack supply with the right plug for that country.

Is a departure board difficult to set up?

No — there is a free app that does the setup for you. It finds the board, connects it to your wifi and lets you choose the station, all from your phone. There is also a full setup guide and UK-based support if anything goes wrong.

What is in the box?

•  Desktop Departures — the board, a USB cable and an instruction guide.
•  Classic and Pro — the board, a mains power supply, a wall mounting kit and an instruction manual.

Everything needed to get going is included; there is nothing else to buy.

When do I need to order by for Christmas?

Last posting is usually around the 18th or 19th of December, and boards in stock ship on 24 to 48 hour delivery. We confirm the exact date each December — it is shown at checkout and emailed to customers. If you have left it too late, a gift voucher is instant and arrives by email.
